Jamega tour - 2008

Congratulations go to Martin Sell who narrowly won a playoff against our own Dan Perrett when they tied at 6 under par after two rounds of the professional tournament held on the 28th / 29th July.

Congratulations also go to Ashley Mansell who traded blows with the Pro's right up to the final hole where a bogey left him on 5 under par, giving him 3rd place overall. His handicap is now down to 1.3 and he is 18 years of age today. Happy Birthday Ash.

Clevedon shone like shimmering gem set in the Bristol Channel for the 12th Jamega Tour event and yes, the sun was shining again!!

We decided to ask the club if we could re-arrange the course and have the existing 9th hole as the 1st, which we felt, made the atmosphere around the clubhouse better and provided a tougher finish.

It was appropriate that the best score on the new layout was to come from the local amateur hero and Clevedon club champion Ashley Mansell. Mansell shot a sensational score of 6 under par 66 ,which is a course record for the revised layout, to set the members talking about an amateur winning a professional tournament.

Mansell’s nearest challenger was another Clevedon legend Dan Perrett who closed with a fine 4 under 68 to lead the pursuit. The chasing pack were hot on Perretts heels with 3 under par scores from Martin Sell, Darryn Lloyd, Sam Robinson and Pete James. The talk was all about whether Mansell could hang on and be the first amateur to win a Jamega Tour event.

The second day started a lot breezier and we felt the scores would be higher than day one. To prove us all wrong of course Danny O’Reilly shot a brilliant 5 under 67 to set a new professional course record and rocket up the leader board and finish in joint 9th place. Cameron Russell. not to be outdone, added a fine 68 to his first round 77 to also finish in a tie for 9th.

As the final groups came to the climax of their rounds the gallery grew in the hope of a local champion, either in Mansell or Perrett.
Mansell, Sell and Perrett were all cruising along nicely at 6 under with none of them looking like being overtaken by the pack.Sell got it to 7 under standing on the last tee, needing a par to win could only manage a bogey 5. Mansells challenge allso skidded to a halt on the last with a bogey 5, much to the disappointment of the large gallery who were supporting both Mansell and Perrett.
Perrett parred the last to tie Sell on 6 under par 138 and so we prepared for a play-off.

The 18th became the play off hole and Sell bombed an enormous tee shot covering well over 300yards into the wind. Both players failed to find the green in regulation and it was the unfortunate Perrett who missed his par putt leaving Sell to hole out for victory.
